MSNBC is reporting on a group of researchers who have been able to wirelessly transmit power. They have dubbed it WiTricity. The actual article from MIT can be found here.
The way this works is that it uses resonance to transmit rather than waves. So they have two copper coils that resonant at the same frequency. One has the power and another has a light bulb. The power is transmitted via resonance thus it does not interact think of a child pumping their legs in order to use a swing. It can be very efficient.
OK we are a long way from have wireless power but the break through here is that their is no need for line of site or high power kill you if you get in the way microwaves beaming down from orbit. The accompanying picture shows the team standing between the two coils while they are operating!
Can anyone say mesh WiTricity? A global power grid and as long as you have a resonnator you can get power. One more scifi gadget becoming reality.
