The CIO Form in conjunction with Nokia and Economist Intelligence Unit have done a survey of 500 CIOs on mobility. It has some very interesting information and statistics in it. E-Commerce News has a good summary of the findings.
I found a couple of items of interest. The first is the shear number of employees that CIOs have designated as mobile workers. It works out to about 20% of thier workforce. I suspect that the days of buying your own device are numbered at least for work purposes. With that high of a user base companies need to begin moving towards standardization of device and services. I hate making predictions since they are really accurate but I have a feeling that we will see this next year emerge as one about device management and IT taking back control. Probably pretty similar to the 80s and reigning in the all those employee purchased PCs.
Another interesting finding is that Nokia realizes this as well. As the reporter points out Nokia is known as a cellphone company not a Smartphone or pocket computer manufacturer. Nokia make be a victim of the changing paradigm in mobility i.e. the move from cellphone to smartphone. Of course working for the enemy, Microsoft has me working towards their demise. So this is good news and bad news. It is good news that Smartphones or ultramobile computers are in demand. It is bad news that Nokia realizes that it has an image problem i.e. they only make cellphones.
I am looking forward to read the complete report which you can get from Nokia.
