The Mobility in Action was a great success. With it, Microsoft was able to demonstrate 720 concurrent connections using real world data and hardware setup.
I think the use of off the shelf hardware and configuration will open some eyes. We did nothing special to the hardware. Also no SAN was involved. This should give people the confidence that a well thought out infrastructure should be able to support thousands of handhelds at around $20-$100 per handheld. Add in a data plan and staff you might look at a budget of between $50-$200 a handheld. The large number the number of handhelds the lower the total cost of ownership per handheld.
